Online Courses on the The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants and their Management in the Caribbean

The Basel Convention Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for the Caribbean (BCRC-Caribbean) has developed a learning platform with self-paced online courses on the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and their Management in the Caribbean.

The courses were derived from outputs of the recently completed regional project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for the “Development and Implementation of a Sustainable Management Mechanism for Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the Caribbean”. The project was implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and executed by the BCRC-Caribbean.

Stakeholders involved in or interested in the implementation of the Stockholm Convention such as government actors in the environment, waste management, agricultural and industry sectors, non-governmental organizations, private sector, academic institutions, students and many more are encouraged and welcomed to take this course!

The courses aim to support the continued exchange of information on the Stockholm Convention and enhance participant understanding in the Caribbean region through the following key areas:

  • An Introduction to the Stockholm Convention.
  • What are POPs, their sources and uses.
  • Understanding and applying the provisions of the Stockholm Convention to reduce and eliminate releases from the use of POPs, its unintentional production and releases from stockpiles and wastes.
  • Understanding meeting the SC Party obligations to develop, revise and update the National Implementation Plan.
